Never give up.
It’s a phrase we stand by in our everyday interactions with our rescued animals. We care for a diverse group of cats—mellow adults, crazy kittens, and often, the shy, scared babies from a colony of community cats when we do a TNR project. Desmond and Loretta, LoLo as her foster mom called her, were rescued from a life outside in a feral colony as little kittens. Since they didn’t start out in the company of humans, they were scared of everyone and didn’t enjoy being pet or picked up.
Desmond and Loretta were taken in and placed in a quiet foster home where they were treated to daily doses of love, pets, and snacks. Both kittens were very food motivated—this meant their foster mom was able to use their favorite kibble to get close and show them that tasty food meant love and cuddles. After several weeks of patient work, Des finally had a breakthrough. He hopped up on the couch, walked right over to foster momma and asked for pets and ear scratches. LoLo took a little longer to warm up, but soon she was relaxing in the windowsill and eating out of foster mom’s hand.
Only a few weeks after moving into the adoption room at our PetSmart location, a magical thing happened to our formerly shy siblings. They were adopted together into a patient, loving home. They continue to thrive and bond with their new family, proving we at KCZD truly do heal hearts one paw at a time. Check out their cute video:
